Uvalde school shooting: Houston-area students commemorate first day of school for survivors after Robb Elementary mass shooting!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Monday is the first day back to school in Uvalde CISD after 19 students and teachers were killed in a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School more than three months ago.

In solidarity with students on their first day back to school after the tragedy, Houston-area students wear maroon and white.

Students and staff at Alief ISD, Friendswood, Tomball, Deer Park, and others are encouraged to participate.

Since the mass shooting in May, changes have been made to security via the Uvalde CISD.

For example, DPS soldiers will now be stationed outside of schools.

Two campuses now have 8-foot fences around the perimeter – although the plan is ultimately to isolate all schools.

Students at Robb Elementary School will not be returning to campus. The school is scheduled to be demolished.

Instead, survivors will go to various schools across the region.

Some say the changes are simply not enough and feel as if the schools are still not safe.

“One of the questions families ask is – the DPS workers who are going to be there – are these the same people who were at school that day? We can’t get an answer,” Adam Martinez said. Parents of Uvalde CISD Students. “They’re not going to give us an answer if they’re going to be the same people. The same school resource officials who were, they’ll be there on campus as well.”

Some Uvalde CISD students chose to attend school almost this year due to the ongoing fear for the safety of the school.
